Resource Curse Theory Courses
The Resource Curse Theory explores how possession of natural resources can lead to civil war, dictatorship, and economic fluctuation. This theory asserts that countries and regions with a high abundance of natural resources tend to fare worse economically than those that do not, particularly when institutions to monitor it are weaker. One of the most common explanations for this phenomenon is the “Dutch Disease”, which occurs when a country has a large pool of natural resources, usually in the form of gas, oil, or minerals, which drives up the exchange rate of the currency and undermines other economic sectors. This leads to a distorted economy where capital investment is largely focused on natural resources, while other sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture fall by the wayside. The Resource Curse Theory also refers to a specific type of corruption that happens when these resources are mismanaged. This can manifest in the form of bribery, kickbacks, embezzlement, or bribery in exchange for access to resources. This kind of corruption can result in weaker government oversight and a population of people who are more vulnerable to exploitation. In addition, the theory suggests that the development of a conflict, often due to underlying ethnic grievances, can exacerbate the already challenging economic and political situation in resource-rich countries. The conflict often draws upon resources in the form of weapons and other supplies, displacing people and causing volatility in international markets. The Resource Curse Theory has important implications for policy makers. For instance, as oil prices rise, governments must take special measures to ensure that the wealth is not concentrated solely in the hands of the elite and that the benefits are spread more widely to benefit all citizens. Policies should also be in place to minimize the risk of corruption and conflict.
