Recce Troop Selection Course
A Recce Troop Selection Course (RTSC) is a specialized military training program designed to assess and develop candidates for Recce Troop—a specialized component of the military’s Special Air Service (SAS). The course is intensive and highly competitive, consisting of a series of physical and mental tests to simulate the type of conditions personnel will face in an SAS Recce Troop unit. Candidates are tested on leadership skills, navigation, communication and medical support, as well as physical agility and the use of weapons. Those who successfully complete the RTSC can join a Recce Troop and be trained for an assigned mission. The RTSC typically runs for 8 weeks and includes an introductory week of physical and practical assessments, followed by five weeks of intense theoretical and practical training. During Weeks 2-6, candidates will be expected to undertake a range of physical and mental tasks and assessments, as well as workshops on military topics such as leadership, communications, First Aid, and close quarters combat. The course ends with a final week of training and assessment, which includes a Recce Troop 'marathon' exercise where candidates are tested on their ability to complete a full series of tasks while carrying heavy loads and navigating unfamiliar territory. RTSC is demanding and rigorous, but if a candidate proves their mettle and demonstrates the necessary aptitude and discipline, they have the opportunity to join an elite unit of the SAS, and serve their country as part of a cohesive team dedicated to protecting their country's interests.
