Radiographer Courses Uk
Radiographer courses in the UK typically involve the study of radiation and the use of imaging technology for diagnosis or treatment. These courses can qualify the graduates for a wide range of work in both the NHS and private practice, and involve a combination of theory and practice. Most radiographer courses in the UK are accredited by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). Courses are also recognised by universities, and these are sometimes mapped onto undergraduate and postgraduate course structures. Programmes are typically three years, and involve two-thirds theoretical instruction and one-third clinical practice. On successful completion, graduates will be qualified to pursue their career as a diagnostic radiographer or a radiation therapist. Radiation therapists can work with a variety of medical teams to diagnose, treat and heal those with cancer or other radiation-targeted illnesses. They use a variety of radiation equipment and technologies to do this, and must be familiar with the radiation safety protocols that apply both in the clinical environment and in the patient’s home. The key subject areas studied include ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, radiobiology and radiation protection. Other associated disciplines include physics, anatomy and physiology and radiation oncology. Prospective radiographers must have robust interpersonal skills. Their work will involve communicating with patients and their family throughout, and successful radiographers will have a thorough understanding of the disease process and its repercussions. They must also be able to interpret the images they have taken, or the results from other imaging modalities, in order to make reliable diagnoses. Radiographer courses in the UK offer a high quality of education and career prospects, as well as a pathway to a lifelong profession in healthcare. Upon graduation, many professional organisations exist to help, support and guide graduates in their career.
