Polycystic Cause Courses
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder characterized by the development and growth of numerous fluid-filled cysts (small sacs filled with fluid) in the kidneys. The cysts can grow very large, eventually replacing much of the normal tissue in the kidneys, leading to impaired kidney function, or kidney failure. PKD is a type of kidney disorder that is passed from parent to child. It is one of the most common inherited diseases leading to kidney failure in adulthood, with an estimated 1 in 500–1,000 people affected worldwide. PKD is typically diagnosed through a physical examination, family history, imaging studies, or a genetic test. There is no cure for the condition, but treatments are available to help control the symptoms, slow the progression of the disease, and reduce the risk of complications such as kidney failure. PKD may also be associated with other health problems, such as high blood pressure and an increased risk of stroke and heart attack. In some cases, a kidney transplant may be necessary.
