Prolonged Course Of Antimicrobial Therapy

Prolonged course of antimicrobial therapy (PCAT) refers to taking antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, or other antimicrobial agents for a longer period of time than what is typically prescribed for an infection. This kind of therapy is also known as long-term antibiotic therapy (LTAT). It is sometimes used for chronic infections which cannot be cured with a standard course of treatment, such as Lyme disease, chronic sinusitis, or certain skin infections. In some cases, PCAT is given to keep an infection under control even when the chances of a full cure are minimal. It is sometimes used in cases where a single short course of antibiotics fails to effectively treat an infection or when existing infection-fighting medicines become ineffective. At times, PCAT may be necessary to prevent a secondary infection or to deal with underlying health conditions that put the patient at greater risk of infection, such as a compromised immune system due to chemotherapy or HIV/AIDS. PCAT requires close monitoring since there is a heightened risk of side effects, particularly when used for long periods of time. The risk of antimicrobial resistance is also an issue that must be taken into consideration. As such, PCAT is typically only recommended in certain cases after careful evaluation. Patients at greatest risk for serious infections should also be closely monitored for potential complications when taking antimicrobials for an extended period of time.
