Preeclampsia Causes Symptoms Courses

Preeclampsia is a condition that typically occurs during pregnancy, involving an elevation in the blood pressure of the pregnant woman and the presence of protein in the urine. It affects up to 10 percent of pregnancies and can have serious consequences, including death of the mother, premature birth, or small for gestational age babies. The exact cause of preeclampsia is unknown, but some risk factors for developing this condition include hypertension, diabetes, obesity, multiple gestations, and previous preeclampsia. Preeclampsia can occur at any time during pregnancy, and is particularly dangerous if it occurs before 34 weeks. The symptoms of preeclampsia are typically headache, blurred vision, sudden weight gain and/or swelling, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and decreased urine output or changes in urine color and smell. In some cases, preeclampsia can lead to a further increase in blood pressure, seizures and other serious medical conditions. If preeclampsia is suspected, medical evaluation and proper management are essential. The pregnant woman should be monitored closely and given care appropriate to her condition. Medications may be prescribed to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of seizures, while bed rest may be recommended. Doctors may also advise pregnant women to reduce salt in their diet and increase fluids. If the condition becomes severe, delivery of the baby may be recommended to reduce the risks to the mother and the baby. By recognizing and treating preeclampsia early on, serious medical complications can be avoided. If you are pregnant and experience any of the symptoms associated with preeclampsia, contact a qualified healthcare professional for evaluation and treatment.
