Pizzicato Courses

Pizzicato is a musical technique in which a stringed instrument such as a violin, guitar, or harp is plucked or “snapped” with the fingertips instead of being bowed. It is most recognized as a feature of light music, including musical comedy, light opera, and music for popular ballet. Pizzicato is often used to create a light, airy texture or to add character or accents to a melody. It is a contrast to legato bowing, which is continuous and smooth. Pizzicato can also be used as a way of keeping time instead of using a metronome; this is especially the case in jazz and blues, where pizzicato is used in the rhythm section. The term pizzicato is derived from the Italian word “pizzico” which means to “pluck”. Beethoven was the first musician to use this technique in a modern symphony. Since then, pizzicato has been widely used in classical music for over 200 years. The technique is usually named as an instruction at the beginning of the piece of music, either as “pizzicato” or “pizz.” It is sometimes combined with other instructions such as "arco" (to instruct the performer to bow the strings) or with dynamic instructions such as “short and light.” Pizzicato can also be combined with other string strokes (such as staccato or col legno) to create interesting textures.
