Pharmacist Courses Required

A Pharmacist is a healthcare professional that is responsible for providing medication and other health-related advice to patients. To become a Pharmacist, one must complete an undergraduate degree in pharmacy and an additional post-graduate program in pharmacy administration and practice. The courses required to become a Pharmacist usually include a mix of pharmacology, medical sciences, chemistry, and business courses. The first step to become a Pharmacist is to complete a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from an accredited university, college, or technical school. Most programs require around four years of study and include topics in pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, and chemistry. Courses will focus on the properties, effects, and interactions of drugs, as well as ethical and legal implications related to healthcare and medicine. In addition to obtaining a bachelor’s degree, many states also require Pharmacists to complete a post-graduate program in order to become certified. This program typically involves a two-year advanced practice curriculum and may include courses in pharmacology, business, and health management. Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will be awarded a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. To practice as a Pharmacist, one must pass the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX). This is a standard examination that tests the knowledge and skills necessary to become a Pharmacist. In addition to taking this exam, most states also require Pharmacists to obtain a controlled-substance license. This is a federal license that allows the individual to handle, dispense, and order dangerous medications. In addition to the courses required to become a Pharmacist, many employers are seeking Pharmacists that have completed additional training in patient counseling and management. These courses provide Pharmacists with advanced knowledge and skills required to assist in providing comprehensive care that meets the individual needs of their patients. Overall, Pharmacists must complete a mix of core courses in pharmacology, medical sciences, chemistry, and business. In addition to this, they must obtain a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and pass the NAPLEX. Additionally, many employers are looking for Pharmacists that have completed additional courses in patient counseling and management.
