Pancreas Courses
The pancreas is a long, flattened gland located near the stomach and intestines in the abdomen. It produces digestive enzymes, hormones including insulin, and plays an important role in digestion. Its main function is to produce enzymes that help with digestion, which are released into the small intestine. It also produces hormones such as insulin, which helps regulate blood sugar levels. The pancreas can also store and release energy in the form of glycogen, which helps regulate blood sugar levels. The pancreas is composed of three different parts. The head is closest to the stomach and duodenum, with the body and tail closer to the spleen. Inside the gland are numerous acinar cells, which are responsible for secreting digestive enzymes. In addition, specialized cells called beta islet cells produce and release insulin and glucagon, two hormones responsible for maintaining a healthy balance of glucose in the blood. Pancreatic diseases and disorders can occur when cells are damaged, are not working properly, or are overproducing hormones. Pancreatic cancer, inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), and diabetes are a few examples of diseases caused by an unhealthy pancreas. Treatment of pancreatic disorders generally involves managing symptoms and complications associated with the disorder, such as controlling blood sugar levels in the case of diabetes.
