Ozymandias Colossal Wreck Courses

Ozymandias is a poem by the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, first published in 1818 in an anthology titled “Rejected Addresses.” It's widely considered one of the most famous and recognizable poems by Shelley, and one of the most influential works of British Romanticism. The poem is a vivid description of a once-powerful and proud king’s ruined statue, a gigantic “Colossal Wreck” sitting in the middle of an empty desert. The poem encourages its audience to consider the paradox of ultimate human mortality and the effects of time on even the greatest of monuments and symbols. The image of Ozymandias’s ruined statue had a powerful effect on Shelley, who was an artist first and foremost. He conveys this through the poem’s vivid imagery and poetic devices, such as personification and anaphora, that emphasize the inevitability of death and decay. The poem ends with the now-famous lines: “My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!” Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away. These words were meant to ask us to think on the insignificance of human pride, fame and accomplishment in the face of mortality and the long passage of time. Shelley’s poem remains popular today and is remembered for its enduring insight and wisdom.
