Ovarian Crescent Sign Courses
The ovarian crescent sign is a clinical sign found on pelvic exam, used to diagnose tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA). It appears as a crescent-shaped thickening of the uterus, filling the cul-de-sac between the uterus and the ovary. It is an important sign to detect TOA due to the significant morbidity associated with this diagnosis. The ovarian crescent sign is a visual clue, and must be confirmed by imaging and/or surgical drainage. CT scans and MRI scans can be used to image the crescent, as well as to detect potential complications. Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive way to both diagnose the TOA and to obtain samples for culture and biopsy. Early recognition of ovarian crescent sign is important for proper treatment and better patient outcomes. If the crescent is present, further imaging is necessary to confirm the diagnosis and begin antibiotic therapy, as delay can increase the risk of complications of TOA. It is important to rule out other causes of pelvic masses at the same time, such as adnexal torsion, ruptured cystic teratoma, or an ectopic pregnancy.
