Orthognathic Course

Orthognathic Surgery, or corrective jaw surgery, is a surgical procedure that corrects and realigns the facial skeletal structures to improve an individual's cosmetic appearance and function. The goal of this type of surgery is to establish a better balance between the facial structures and the teeth, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing outcome and improved function of the jaw and teeth. Orthognathic surgery can be used to correct issues such as a protruding jaw, misalignment of the jaw, or an overly receded lower jaw. In some cases, it can also improve a patient’s ability to properly close their mouth, therefore aiding in conditions such as sleep apnea. The process for orthognathic surgery depends on the complexity of the planned procedure, but typically involves two steps. The first step involves orthodontic treatment (braces) to prepare the dental structure to facilitate the planned orthognathic adjustment. The second part of surgery is performed in the operating room with the patient under general anesthesia in order to allow the surgeon to make any necessary adjustments to the facial bones, muscles, and other structures. In order to become certified in orthognathic surgery, medical professionals must complete a specialized course of training that includes both classroom and hands-on training. The course focuses on teaching students the fundamentals of facial anatomy, orthodontics, 3D imaging, and surgical planning and technique. Once the course is completed, practitioners must perform a qualifying number of supervised orthognathic surgeries before becoming a certified practitioner.
