Ontario Course Outlines
Ontario Course Outlines are documents outlining the curriculum and learning activities of certain courses offered in Ontario's secondary schools. They provide a framework to guide instruction and assessment, and are aligned with the provincial curriculum policy documents. Ontario Course Outlines provide students, parents and teachers with important information about the expectations for success and what skills and knowledge are important to gain in a particular subject. Ontario Course Outlines outline the course content and provide the teaching resources and strategies necessary to create a positive classroom learning environment where students learn and grow. They provide teachers with information on do's and don'ts when teaching a particular course and what topics are expected to be discussed. The expected learning outcomes are listed in the outline so that teachers can develop their course plans accordingly. This helps to ensure consistency between teachers and school boards in terms of coverage for the same course content. Course outlines also provide an indication of academic performance expectations and assessment strategies to assess student progress. Ontario Course Outlines are intended to guide teachers in developing appropriate course plans that meet the curriculum expectations of the Ministry of Education. They can serve as a starting point for development for courses and provide expectations for the learning environment or classroom management. They are posted online and are typically updated every two years.
