Lower Course Of A River Ks2
A river is composed of several distinct parts, each with its own name and purpose. The lower course refers to the stage of a river's journey after it has passed through the upper course. During the lower course, the river slows down, forming loops and meanders, and frequently spilling over its banks, making room for marshes, swamps and oxbow lakes. As the river heads downstream, it collects sediments and deposits them around its banks and on its bed. This also causes it to slow further, and it may eventually become a slow-flowing estuary, transporting vast quantities of sediment and nutrients to the sea. As the river moves through its lower course, it develops many branches and tributaries, which help to reduce the flow and allow organisms to move upstream. A tributary is a river or stream that flows into a larger body of water. The presence of the tributaries and their deposits of sediment builds the banks of the river and helps to form a floodplain, an area of land close to the river, subject to regular flooding. The river-created habitats of meanders, marshes, swamps and levees provide food and shelter for many animals and plants. Parts of the lower course are often made into nature reserves, such as the National Trust’s Lower Derwent Valley reserve in Derbyshire and the RSPB’s North Norfolk Coast Marshes. The lower course of a river is an incredibly important habitat, both for the species that live amongst its meanders, marshes and oxbow lakes, and for the people and animals who live downstream and rely on the water downstream for their livelihoods.
