Life Course Persistent Antisocial Behavior
Life course persistent antisocial behavior, sometimes referred to as psychopathy, is a complex trait seemingly present since birth. It is a pattern of behavior displayed by a person who continues to display features associated with antisocial personalities regardless of the changes in their life circumstances over time. Early signs of life course persistent antisocial behavior include lying, stealing, aggression, and indifference to the feelings of others. Those displaying life course persistent antisocial behavior demonstrate disregard for societal norms, laws, and conventions, resulting in them often engaging in criminal activities. It is thought that a combination of both genetic and environmental factors contribute to developing life course persistent antisocial behavior. Research suggests the possibility of the disorder being passed down through the generation and factors such as poverty, substance abuse, and exposure to violent behavior in a person’s early childhood may increase the likelihood of exhibiting life course persistent antisocial behavior. Most interventions are focused on addressing their behavioral issues, although the most effective treatment method is cognitive-behavioral. This method attempts to modify the person’s approach to their thinking as well as their behavior. In addition, neuropsychological testing can be used to evaluate the neurological underpinnings in those diagnosed with the disorder and if necessary, medications may be prescribed to help address underlying mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, or substance abuse. Ultimately, treating and managing life course persistent antisocial behavior requires a multidisciplinary approach and dedicated professionals who are trained to diagnose and treat this disorder.
