Life Course Persistence
Life course persistence is a term used to describe the continuation of an individual’s behavior, beliefs and values over time. It is based on the notion that life experiences are cumulative, resulting in changes to one’s attitude, beliefs and values that persist as they cycle through various life stages. Life Course Persistence helps to explain why an individual in their thirties may exhibit the same behaviors and values as they did when they were in their twenties. The central idea of Life Course Persistence is that the experiences we have throughout our life are intrinsically linked to the attitudes, values and beliefs we hold. This is referred to as the ‘cumulative’ nature of life course experiences. What we learn and the decisions we make at each stage of our life progress with us. As we pass through each stage of our life, our experiences and the decisions we make help to shape our attitudes, values and beliefs in a collective way. The theory of Life Course Persistence is beneficial in understanding how our attitudes, beliefs and values may change as we move through different life stages. In addition, it allows us to gain a better understanding of why certain traits are more persistent than others. By understanding these interdependencies, we can become better equipped to support individuals in times of change, helping them to develop new life strategies to manage the challenges they may face in varying stages of their life.
