Educational Psychologist Courses
Educational Psychologist courses are designed to help those interested in learning how to better understand and assess the educational needs of students. They are designed to help individuals develop proficiency in educational psychology and the application of theories, principles, research, assessment, and intervention strategies. Courses cover topics like educational psychology theories, assessment methods, research methods, educational diagnosis, individual and group interventions, and professional issues. Most courses require a background in developmental psychology or counseling, and many emphasize the integration of assessment and intervention. Courses cover topics such as educational assessment and diagnosis, educational research, evidence-based practices and assessment methods, psychometrics and normative assessment, an introduction to career counseling and exploration, the integration of educational interventions, psychological processes and interventions in education, and the roles and ethics of educational psychologists. Educational psychologists seek to improve learning outcomes for students, by studying and understanding the interaction between the learning environment, student characteristics, and the application of educational policies. They often provide direct services, such as assessment and treatment, as well as training and consultation in the management of learning issues. As coursework progresses, students typically gain a better understanding of educational psychology theory and research, as well as the intricacies of the learning environment and student characteristics. Upon completion of these courses, students will have the necessary skills to help create effective educational plans and interventions, provide appropriate and effective instruction, evaluate student learning, develop interpersonal relationship-building and problem-solving strategies, and consult with other educators, administrators, and parents. A degree in educational psychology is necessary to practice as an educational psychologist in the United States and is often a prerequisite for most school psychologist positions. Some states require educational psychologists to hold a master's degree while other states require a doctoral degree. Courses taken within the educational psychology degree focus on theory, research, assessment, and interventions, allowing individuals to build the necessary competencies to become successful educational psychologists.
