How to write and publish academic review paper

Scientists are expected to publish a certain number of articles for a degree, promotion, appointment, and tenure. However, publishing a review article is puzzling for many students and scientists. In many institutes, students do not get formal training on how to publish review papers.

In this course, you will get an introduction to preparing an academic review paper. You may ask a question, why review? A review article or review paper does not report original research and does not require research results. Reviews generally summarize the existing literature to explain the current state of understanding on the topic. Reviews are essential in an academic career when students become experts in their fields. Reviews can highlight authors' work, acknowledge contributions of colleagues, propose solutions to problems in the field, and analyze state-of-the-art.

Academic papers are stories explained by sequences of Figures and coherently flowing, well-structured text. Before starting the preparation of the paper, scientists study state-of-the-art and write their reviews in "storytelling" ways. We will consider the most critical aspects of academic writing. You will learn how to prepare figures and obtain permission to reproduce figures in your review. You will learn how to read academic papers effectively.

The course instructor worked at Harvard, MPI, TUM, and the University of Toronto. He has co-authored over 50 research papers (in Chem Soc Reviews, Advanced Materials, ACS Nano, Angewandte Chemie, Advanced Optical Materials, Applied Materials Today, Chemistry of Materials, JACS, Nanoscale, Applied Physics Letters, and other journals), which were cited more than 5000 citations. In addition, he served as a Guest/Topic Editor in several journals. Currently, he is the reviewer of academic journals in applied science and engineering.
