10 Points for Better Coaching

10 Points for Better Coaching

This course is about ten points that will enhance your coaching. As a coach, you need to challenge yourself and get better daily constantly. The first thing you should ask yourself is, are you enjoying what you are doing? If you are not in this profession for the right reasons, it will not be possible to succeed long term.

Point 1: One More Theory

Ask yourself, are you surrounded with people who are better than you at a particular topic? As a coach, you need a vast network of people who can help you and your team get to the next level.

Point 2: You Cannot See What You Don't Think

Coach Dunlap recommends several books that will stimulate your thinking. He also shares why it is essential to build a knowledge notebook.

Point 3: Praise, Prompt & Leave

When you are trying to correct certain things to get the player's attention, praise him for something he or she is doing well. In terms of the prompt, offer the player improvement. After that, get acknowledgement and walk away.

Point 4: 5 Laws of Learning

  1. Tell them what you want to know

  2. Show them what you want them to do

  3. Let them slowly demonstrate what you are telling them

  4. Correct the demonstration at a slow pace

  5. Repetition

Point 5: Nap, Snack & Play

To avoid burnout, coaches need to have a life outside of the court. Make sure to spend quality time with your family and friends daily, even for 5 minutes.

Point 6: Faces Change but Problems Stay the Same

Spend a lot of time thinking and talking with your assistants about the drills you are using and things you are emphasizing. Make sure that you are keeping the big picture always in front of the team.

Point 7: Good Habits are hard to break

How much time are you putting each day in your practice plan? John Wooden was spending 2 hours every day preparing the practice. After the practice, always review it to see what should be changed next time.

Point 8: Innovation Happens in Your Own Gym

There is lots of room for innovation and creativity in our game. As a coach, you need to be a problem solver. There is no room for complaining. Just make the best with the players you have.

Point 9: Creating Your Own Board of Trustees

Who are the people that are mentoring you when things don't go well? Or with whom you celebrate your victories?

Pont 10: The Winning is in the Picking

Pick the people you spend the time with daily. That is the single most significant thing you do.

Conclusion

Plan your work and work your plan. At least once a year, evaluate where you are going with your strategy as a coach, teacher, and person.
