Are you new to the urban sketch scene or want a refresher on the fundamentals? 

Well, this course covers everything there is to know, including what it is, where to go, and starter techniques and tips for the urban sketcher on the go. From finding that perfect location to getting your sketch just right, this course is filled with the information you need to make all your sketching adventures successful. Sneak peek into what’s all included.

Drawing our life stories seems to be a universal part of human nature, going all the way back to prehistoric man in caves. At Artists Network, when we talk about urban sketching, we don’t put the emphasis on anything city-centric. Instead, we focus on sketching in urban sketching as a creative and fun activity — a way to capture the people, places and things around us — in our sketchbooks. For capturing those ideas here are some tools and kits you should have around you.

SUPPLY KIT REQUIREMENTS

- Waterproof fine liner (e.g., Sharpie pen or Pigma Micron pen)

- Thicker felt-tip pen (e.g., Faber-Castell Pitt Artist marker in B tip)

- A small (preferably ~ 4″ × 6″ or 5″ × 8″) mixed media or watercolor sketchbook (e.g., Hand Book, Strathmore, Canson, Moleskine, Stillman & Birn)

- A compact set of watercolors (e.g., Winsor & Newton Cotman Sketchers Pocket Box or similar)

- Waterbrush (e.g., Pentel Aquash, size large)

- Paper towels

- Zippered mesh bag or pouch to hold materials

- Binder clips

OPTIONAL EXPANDED KIT

- Fountain pen (e.g., Lamy Safari with EF nib) and non-water-soluble fountain-pen-safe ink such as Noodler’s Lexington Grey or Platinum Carbon

- Travel brush size 6 round or larger that comes to a good point (brands include Rosemary & Co./da Vinci/Escoda—sable or a synthetic/blend)

- ½-inch flat brush (can cut handle to fit pouch if needed)

- Water container with lid (such as a small Nalgene bottle).
