Commonwealth Supported Place Courses

A Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) is a type of tertiary education place in Australia subsidised by the Commonwealth Government. CSPs are available to full-time and part-time students at a number of universities, TAFEs and other approved higher education institutions across Australia. A CSP allows a student to enrol in a course and pay a student contribution amount that is significantly lower than the full cost of the course. Students who are eligible for CSPs will be required to make a contribution towards the cost of their course. This contribution amount is set by the Australian Government and is indexed each year to take account of inflation. CSP students are also required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). Under a CSP, the Australian Government pays for all or part of a student’s course through a HECS-HELP loan and the student pays a contribution amount, which can range from 25% to 70% of the cost of their course. CSPs can be allocated to undergraduate, postgraduate and non-award courses, such as enabling programs. Eligibility criteria vary across institutions and courses, so it’s best to speak to your university to find out if CSPs are available for the course you wish to pursue. It’s important to remember that student contributions for Commonwealth Supported Place courses form part of your lifetime HELP debt and may be subject to an annual interest rate. This can be repaid when your income exceeds a designated threshold.
