China Opium Wars Crash Course
The Opium Wars of China, also known as the Anglo-Chinese Wars, were two wars that took place in the mid- to late 1800s. They began when Britain’s East India Company attempted to push opium onto the Chinese market, despite a ban on the drug by Chinese officials. The first Opium War lasted from 1839 to 1842 and ended with a treaty that gave Britain access to five Chinese ports and established a base near Hong Kong. The second Opium War began in 1856, when Britain was offended by restrictions on the importation of opium into China, and ended in 1860 with another treaty that further weakened the Chinese government and allowed foreign traders better access to the Chinese markets. Both wars had a devastating impact on China. First, the Chinese military was no match for the more advanced European forces as the Chinese military forces were mostly composed of infantry and small gunboats, making them ill-equipped to defend against superior European forces. Additionally, the treaties gave preferential economic treatment to foreign traders, severely limiting the power of the Chinese government and its ability to benefit from foreign trade. The Opium Wars also had a significant social impact, as the trade of opium created a growing addiction problem among the Chinese people and the influx of Western culture clashed with traditional Chinese values. It was not until the 1911 Chinese Revolution that the Chinese began to rebuild and modernize their military, allowing them to resist foreign interference and eventually free themselves from the crippling treaties of the Opium Wars.
