40 Hour Radiation Safety Course

A 40 hour radiation safety course is a comprehensive, interactive program designed to educate individuals on protecting themselves and the public from radiation, the risks associated with radiation exposure and any potential health, safety and environmental issues. This course is suitable for individuals who work with radiation or x-ray equipment, are exposed to radiation from medical treatments and/or work in areas regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). At the end of the course, students are expected to understand and be able to discuss: -Radiation Safety Fundamentals - types of radiation, units of radiation, sources, protection and more -Potential Health, Safety and Environmental Hazards - radiation control and monitoring, protective equipment and shielding -Regulatory Compliance - rules and regulations, role of the NRC, state and federal laws -Radiation Measurement and Monitoring - instrumentation and detection, safe work practices -Emergency Response - health scare management, accident response -Radiation Management - traceability, resource utilization The 40 hour radiation safety course generally includes hands-on experience with radiation detection, manipulation and protection tools, as well as workshops or practicums led by instructors. Depending on the course provider, online or in-person instruction may be available. Additionally, continuing education and recertification programs may also be available.
