Solvent Classes Courses
Solvent classes refer to a system for grouping solvents according to their chemistry. The classification of solvents into classes is important for accurately predicting and understanding the physical and chemical properties of a variety of solvents. Solvent classes are based on the number and types of atoms, such as hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen, present in the molecules of the solvent, as well as the charges on the atoms, the type of bonds between them, and the molecular geometry. The solvents are classified depending on the arrangement of atoms within their molecular structure. For example, water and alcohols are polar solvents, meaning they have positive and negative charges on different sides of the molecule due to the unequal sharing of electrons. Polar solvents are also called protic solvents since they contain hydrogen atoms bonded directly to oxygen or nitrogen atoms. Examples of polar solvents include methanol, ethanol, dimethyl ether, and dimethyl sulfoxide. Non-polar solvents, on the other hand, lack hydrogen atoms bonded directly to oxygen or nitrogen. Examples of these solvents include hydrocarbons, chloroform, benzene, and toluene. Non-polar solvents are non-protic since they don't contain hydrogen atoms, and they lack the positive and negative charges seen in polar solvents. The third common solvent class is amphoteric, meaning the solvent molecules contain both positive and negative charges. Amphoteric solvents are commonly used when neither polar nor non-polar solvents are suitable. Examples of amphoteric solvents include dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, and dimethylsulfoxide. Solvent classes can be further broken down into subclasses, such as aromatic or aliphatic. Aromatic solvents contain a benzene ring, which imparts a sweet smell, while aliphatic solvents are composed of linear or branched hydrocarbons. Depending on the solvents specified in the application, the correct solvent class can be selected for the particular application requirements.
