Ricin Causes Courses

Ricin is a highly toxic compound made from castor beans that can cause severe health effects if ingested, inhaled, or injected. Exposure to ricin can occur by accidentally ingesting the seed, inhaling contaminated air, or through physical contact. Ingestion of ricin can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, followed by failure of the liver, spleen, and kidneys, and eventually death. Inhalation of ricin can cause difficulty breathing, chest pain, and coughing up blood. Injection of ricin causes severe tissue damage and necrosis. Death can occur rapidly due to organ failure. Treatment of an exposure to ricin is supportive care, depending on the severity of the exposure. It is recommended to seek medical attention immediately if there is a suspicion of exposure to ricin.
