Retinitis Causes Courses

Retinitis is an inflammation of the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer of cells that lines the back of the eye. Retinitis can be caused by a variety of factors, including infectious, genetic, and autoimmune diseases. Infectious Causes. Viral infections are a common cause of retinitis. The Varicella zoster virus, which causes chickenpox in children, can also cause retinitis. Other viral causes include cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, and HIV. Bacterial infections, such as Lyme disease, syphilis, and tuberculosis, can also cause retinitis. Genetic Causes. Some forms of retinitis are the result of inherited genetic mutations. For example, Retinitis Pigmentosa is a degenerative disease of the retina caused by genetic mutations in the rhodopsin gene. Other genetic forms of retinitis can be caused by mutations in the peripherin gene. Autoimmune Causes. Retinitis can be caused by autoimmune diseases in which the body's immune system attacks healthy tissues in the eye. Examples include Uveitis, Birdshot Retinochoroidopathy, and Punctate Inner Choroidopathy. In some cases, another autoimmune disease, such as Multiple Sclerosis or Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, is the underlying cause of the retinitis. Treatment for retinitis depends on the underlying cause. Medications and eye drops may be used to reduce inflammation and prevent further damage to the retina. Other treatment options may include laser therapy, surgical interventions, and vitamins or supplements. In some cases, treatment may slow the progression of the disease or reduce symptoms.
