Respiratory frequency, or respirations per minute, is important to keep track of in children, as it signals how well their body is functioning. Generally, a healthy rate for respiration in a child is between 20 to 30 breaths per minute. At rest, this rate should be about 12 to 20 breaths per minute for children aged one to four years old, and 10 to 16 breaths per minute for children aged five to 10 years old. Respirations may speed up or become more shallow with an infection or other health issue. Very rapid respirations, known as tachypnea, can indicate fever, asthma, pneumonia, or even sepsis. Also, very slow respirations, known as bradypnea, can indicate shock or a brain injury. If you notice concerns in your child’s respirations, it’s important to consult a medical professional. A child's respiration rate can also be affected by altitude, stress, and certain medications. Therefore, it’s important to record both the rate and the environment in which you take the readings for the most accurate information. While digital thermometers can accurately measure respiratory frequency, you can also count the breaths a child takes in one minute. Parents should be aware of their child’s normal respiratory rate and watch for any changes. By monitoring the respirations of your child, you can quickly detect a health issue and contact your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
