Resentment Causes Courses
Resentment is a strong and often long-lived emotion that can be caused by a variety of factors. Some of the most common causes of resentment are unequal treatment, unresolved conflict, perceived betrayal, prolonged disappointment or unfairness, unmet expectations, and envy. Inequality: When a person feels like they are treated differently than their peers, it can lead to resentment. This can be the result of someone being treated as more important or valuable than another person. It can also occur when other people receive more financial resources, privileges, or opportunities than someone else does. Unresolved Conflict: When people don't directly address a conflict or disagreement, it can lead to unresolved hurt and anger. Resentment can develop if one person feels like they weren't heard or their concerns aren't taken seriously. Perceived Betrayal: A sense of betrayal can immediately cause strong feelings of resentment. This happens when one person feels that someone else has acted in a way that betrayed their trust or a promise made. It can also occur in situations where someone consistently chooses another person's interests or needs over their own. Prolonged Disappointment or Unfairness: Dissatisfaction over the long-term can lead to resentment. People who feel like they have consistently been wronged, excluded, or taken advantage of can become angry and resentful of the people involved. Unmet Expectations: If someone feels that their expectations were not met, this can also lead to resentment. This can be the result of someone living up to a responsibility or a certain level of performance that was expected of them, but failing to do so. Envy: Envy is the desire to have something enjoyed by another person. This can be material objects, success, relationships, or any number of things that someone else has that we don't have. Envy can lead to resentment because of the feeling of discontent and injustice seen in comparison to someone else. Resentment can be a difficult emotion to manage and can often have an adverse effect on a person's life. To address these feelings, it's important to examine the cause of the resentment and find healthy ways of improving the situation or dealing with the emotion.

- Practice identifying and allowing yourself to feel the underlying emotions that anger may be superimposed upon — such as hurt or fear. Strive to be present with and accept these feelings and the vulnerability they elicit.
- Practice being consciously present with your anger and resentment. Observe it. Allow it to simply be. Hold it. Visualize putting space around it. Notice what happens.
- Identify how you may have contributed to the situation(s) that you are angry or resentful about. Be aware that people (including you) frequently play a part in the circumstances about which they are angry and/or resentful.
- Practice expressing anger and resentment differently. Share these feelings with safe, supportive individuals whom you trust. Journal or write about them.
- Learn and practice relaxation and self-calming techniques. Examples include intentional breathing, mindfulness, meditation, yoga, Qi Gong, progressive relaxation, and quiet, unplugged downtime.
- As difficult as it may be, endeavor to practice treating those people you feel angry at or have resentment toward with kindness and compassion. Notice what happens when you change how you act toward them — they will often change how they act toward you.
- Resist the urge to be a channel for the anger and resentment of others. The anger and resentment of others can be seductive — they can have an almost magnetic pull.
- Practice applying the understanding that unless you’ve learned how to change the past, it’s as good as it’s ever going to get. Find ways to remind yourself of this whenever you need to — you don’t have to like what’s happening in the present or has happened in the past in order to accept it.
