Reptilia Classes Courses

Reptilia is a class of animals that includes snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodiles, and tuataras. This group of animals is known for their tough skin which is covered in scales and the ability to reproduce by laying amniotic eggs, meaning their eggs are encased in a hard outer shell. Reptiles are cold-blooded and often thrive in climates which ranges from tropical to desert-like environments. Due to their wide range of habitats, there are hundreds of species within the Reptilia class. The first reptiles evolved during the Paleozoic era and from that time reptiles have evolved and adapted to their environments in many different ways. For example, snakes have evolved to lack limbs and burrow with their scaly bellies while lizards have developed a variety of skills to help them run and hide. Turtles have been known to survive a long time without food or water, and crocodiles have adapted to live in salty or brackish waters. Reptilia is divided into four subclasses: Anapsida, Amphisia, and Synapsida. Anapsid reptiles lack openings in their skulls and are represented by turtles, tortoises, and terrapins. Amphisians are reptiles that have holes in their temporal regions and includes snakes. Synapsida is a subclass of reptiles which includes the mammal-like reptiles and modern day mammals, such as humans and other primates. Reptiles are important for the environment as they control pest populations, consume dead plant and animal material, and provide food for other predators. Additionally, the shells of some reptiles, such as tortoises, can be used in fashion and decoration, and their skin can be used to make leather products. Reptiles are an important part of the planet's biodiversity and play an integral role in biological interactions within ecosystems.
