Reggio Classroom Courses

A Reggio classroom is a type of early childhood classroom model derived from the philosophy developed by the late Italian educator and psychoanalyst, Loris Malaguzzi. The Reggio Emilia approach focuses on creating an environment in which children are actively engaged in their own learning and are able to express their individual learning styles. Reggio classrooms are typically filled with natural materials, like rattan, sand, water, dried pasta, and clay. These materials allow children to naturally explore and learn in a creative and meaningful way. There is a receptive atmosphere in the classroom with an emphasis on collaboration among the children, their families and educators. In these classrooms, teachers are not just “teachers”, but guides and facilitators. They observe and document children’s activities and are able to used these observations as a way to help guide and challenge children in their learning. Reggio classrooms typically have an open floor plan, allowing for clear lines of sight between different communities of learning. It also allows children to easily move from one learning station to the next. Teachers in these classrooms use the surrounding environment to teach academic concepts. For instance, they may use natural materials like leaves, rocks, and water to teach children about science and mathematics. Though Reggio classrooms often vary in design, they all share one common element: a dedication to promoting the social, emotional, and cognitive development of children. By creating unique learning opportunities that allow children to explore their interests, develop self-awareness, and express themselves in meaningful ways, Reggio classrooms give children the tools they need to become independent learners.
