Refractionist Course


Refractionist Course is a path to becoming an optician or ophthalmic technician. It is usually a two-year program that combines didactic and clinical lab education. After the program, which focuses on the physics and mathematics of optics, the student is qualified to accurately assess the prescription needs of individual patients to ensure they receive the correct lenses. In the first year of the program, the student will learn the basics of ophthalmic optics, including optical terminology and measurement, as well as anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the eye. The curriculum also covers lens power additions, body measurements and special measurements for designing frames. During this time, the student learns about normal and abnormal conditions of the eye and their impacts on vision. In the second year, the student focuses on clinical results and lens designs. This includes topics such as application of lens powers, progressive lenses, and specialty lenses. In addition, they learn how to fit contact lenses and analyzes eye diseases and disorders. This course prepares the student to be a Certified Refractionist or a Licensed Optician. They are in an important position because they provide the patient with a proper refraction and set the foundation for accurate contact lens and eyeglass lens designs. During the course, the student will acquire the important skills to help provide excellent vision care for their patients.
