Rectal Crescent Courses
A rectal crescent is an anatomical abnormality that can occur during fetal development and is characterized by a narrowing or indentation of the rectal wall. This abnormality can lead to functional or structural obstructions, pain, and other problems in the rectum. In most cases, rectal crescents are asymptomatic and occur due to a narrowing of the rectum due to misalignment of the rectal segments or an abnormal attachment of the sphincter muscles. One of the primary symptoms of a rectal crescent is difficulty in passing stools along with straining, cramping, and urge to pass stools more frequently. Other symptoms can include burning sensation during bowel movements, anal itching, bleeding from the anus and rectal prolapse (intestinal segments slipping from the rectum). Rectal crescents can be diagnosed through clinical techniques such as digital rectal examination, barium enema, anorectal manometry, rectoscopy, and endoanal sonography. Treatment for rectal crescents may include conservative treatments such as increasing dietary fiber and fluids, intubated evacuation and manual removal of stool, as well as more aggressive treatments such as colostomy, rectal dilation, and corrective surgeries. Due to the risk of permanent damage to the rectal wall, rectal crescents should be addressed as soon as possible.
