Ranitidine Causes Cancer Courses
Ranitidine is an antihistamine drug commonly used to relieve the symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux. While it is an effective short-term treatment, there have been recent reports that ranitidine is linked to an increased risk of cancer. Studies have suggested that long-term use of ranitidine may cause genetic mutations and DNA damage, leading to an increased risk of a variety of cancers, including colon, stomach, liver, and bladder cancer. Other reports suggest that ranitidine may also increase the risk of ovarian, pancreatic, and prostate cancer. The exact mechanism for how ranitidine causes cancer is not yet known, however researchers believe that the drug may work by either directly causing DNA damage or by interfering with the body’s ability to repair itself. In light of these recent reports, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recommended that individuals stop taking ranitidine and consult their doctor for alternative heartburn treatments. Although ranitidine may be effective in the short-term, the long-term health risks associated with the drug may outweigh the benefits.
