Radiology Courses Requirements
Prospective radiology technology students must meet certain criteria in order to enroll in a radiology course. High school graduation or a GED equivalency is typically one of the primary requirements for a radiology program. In many cases, radiology course instructors also rely on other criteria, such as successful completion of college-level mathematics and science courses. In the United States, applicants often take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam to qualify for the program. Radiology courses may have additional requirements related to the student's physical abilities, communication skills and expectations for overall academic performance. Basic clinical skills such as the ability to move patients, read vital signs and understand patient positioning are also often tested. Written and verbal communication is an important part of a radiology course, as students must be able to comprehend and convey information on a variety of radiology-related topics, so having an understanding of basic medical terminology before applying helps. A student applying for a radiology course should possess emotional and mental stability, a commitment to following safety guidelines and the ability to work cooperatively with others. Other qualities are a deep understanding of human anatomy, understanding of radiation safety procedures, the ability to type and use computers and strong organizational skills. Radiology courses may also require the student to pass a background check and obtain certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic life support.
