Racecourses In Britain
Britain is home to dozens of truly iconic racecourses, all of which have nurtured some of the world’s greatest jockeys, trainers, and horses. From the magnificent 2006 Pertemps King’s Stand Stakes winner Choisir, who was trained in the shadows of Epsom Downs Racecourse, to the legendary Shergar, who stormed to victory at the 1981 Epsom Derby, Britain’s racecourses have seen and been witness to some extraordinary sporting achievements. When it comes to racing in Britain, few racecourses have the same nationwide appeal as Kelso Racecourse in Scotland. Found in the heart of the Border Country, Edinburgh is today one of the most popular mid-week race venues in Britain. Its idiosyncratic track has been the birthplace of champions such as Arkle, who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup three years in a row, and Red Rum, who won the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977. Another of Britain’s most famous racecourses is Ascot Racecourse, located near London in the heart of Royal Berkshire. The venue has been home to the world’s oldest Group One race, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, since 1940 and has seen countless epic races over the years. Down in the South-West lies Chepstow Racecourse, which opened its gates for the first time in 1926. The venue has grown in popularity since then, and in recent years it has seen some of the biggest names in racing compete in the Welsh Grand National, a fixture that attracts some of the greatest British trainers. If you’re looking to enjoy a day out with your family, York Races is the place to go. Located in North Yorkshire, the course is renowned for hosting one of Britain’s greatest meetings that takes place over two days, with more than 100,000 people flocking to watch the racing each year. In the South-East of England, there’s Newmarket Racecourse, which is widely recognised as the birthplace of thoroughbred racing. Horse racing has been held at the course since 1636, and it’s widely known today as the home of the internationally renowned 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas races. From the scenic surroundings of the Borders to the prestigious Royal Ascot, British racecourses are steeped in history and tradition, and remain an essential part of life for many horse racing enthusiasts. Whether you’re looking for thrilling action or just a relaxed day out with your friends and family, Britain’s racecourses are definitely worth a visit.
