Qld Parliament Courses

Queensland’s Parliament is currently offering a range of courses which aim to inform and empower those who are interested in politics and government. Designed to give students the knowledge and skills they need to become successful as candidates and MPs or to work as employees within the parliamentary system of Queensland, these courses are a great way to develop skills and gain an understanding of how to engage in the legislative process. The courses are split into five categories, and each one is tailored to the particular needs of students. These courses include: • Introduction to Parliament – This course introduces students to constitutional practices and conventions, outlines the processes the government uses to process legislation and it also provides an introduction to the roles of the speaker and members. • Understanding Parliamentary Procedure – This course contains details on how Parliament works, including how committees and party caucuses work and how motions are tabled and how debate is conducted. • Campaigning for Parliament – This course is suited for candidates and employees of Parliament who want to learn more about the electoral process. It focuses on areas such as identifying and understanding the electorate, conducting surveys, media campaigns, fundraising and candidate selection. • Understanding Legislative Processes – This course is designed to provide students with knowledge on procedures and practices involved with the preparation of bills, their passage through the legislative process, and their eventual assent by the Governor. • Debating in Parliament – This course provides insight into debating skills, including understanding the rules of debate, public speaking, organisational and competence in argument. If you are interested in learning more about being involved in the operation of Parliament in Queensland, then one of these courses may be right for you. Each course is split into modules which are easy to follow, making them ideal for busy professionals. You will also receive hands-on experience by actually participating in simulated exercises and participating in debates. With the knowledge gained from these courses, you will be better placed to work either within Queensland Parliament or campaigned for a seat.
