Qaa Approved Access Course

A QAA approved access course is a specific set of higher education qualifications for adults who don't meet the traditional criteria for university entry. The qualifications are recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) as equivalent to A-level standard, and provide entry onto a wide range of university degree courses. Studies covered by a QAA approved access course vary, depending on the student's academic background, experience and personal interests. However, most courses offer a mix of general education, followed by a subject specific-focus. This means that adults who have not recently studied, or who have not taken exams, can gain entry to higher education through studying an access course appropriate to the career they would like to pursue. The course content is designed to bridge the gap between GCSE-level Department for Education (DfE) qualifications and the A-levels typically seen as the minimum entry level in order to be considered for university courses. Usually courses are part-time, to accommodate for adults who are also either working or caring for a family. By undertaking a QAA approved access course, adults can gain the equivalent academic qualifications to those of 18-year-olds entering university. This helps to ensure a level playing field abilities and experience, but specific courses may also require work experience or demonstrate additional life-skills. The QAA is a national Higher Education body that is responsible for assuring and improving the academic standards of education in the UK. It has recognised that access courses are a valid route to higher education, and will approve only those courses that meet stringent standards, ensuring that adults are given an equal chance to succeed in their educational endeavours.
