Pyelonephritis Causes Courses
Pyelonephritis is a type of kidney infection caused by bacteria entering the kidneys. The bacteria can come from different sources, such as the bladder, urethra, or bloodstream. Common causes of pyelonephritis include: • Unprotected sexual intercourse: Bacteria from the vagina or rectum can enter the urethra and travel up to the kidneys. • Bacterial urinary tract infections (UTI): Bacteria from the urethra can spread up to the kidneys and cause an infection. • Kidney stones: Blockages in the urinary tract can increase the risk of developing a kidney infection. • Bacteria in the bloodstream: Bacteria from other parts of the body can spread to the urinary system and the kidneys through the bloodstream. • Abdominal surgery: Damage or irritation to the urinary tract caused by abdominal surgery may increase the risk of infection. • Weakened immune system: People who have weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or undergoing chemotherapy, are at higher risk of developing pyelonephritis. • Suppressed bladder activity: People who use drugs or alcohol, or who have spinal cord injuries, may be at an increased risk of infection due to their suppressed bladder activity. • Uncontrolled diabetes: Increased sugar in the urine can damage the urinary tract, making it more susceptible to infection. • Blockages: Urinary tract blockages caused by tumors, enlarged prostate, or scar tissue can increase the risk of pyelonephritis.
