Pushover Curves Courses


Pushover curves typically refer to the graphical representation of a building or structure's response to a specific seismic force. Specifically, they graph the strength of the lateral force applied to the building and the displacement of the building in response. This visualization helps engineers understand the potential risks and damage that a structure may withstand during a major seismic event. Pushover curves are determined by experimentation and testing. A building must be specially constructed in order to have its response to lateral forces properly tested and recorded. Sensors measure the displacement of the building in response to the lateral force applied. The force and displacement data are then plotted on a graph. The shape of the pushover curve is often used to evaluate the safety and integrity of a building. A steep, curved line signals a good response to the lateral force, whereas a shallow, straight line indicates that the building does not respond well to the lateral loads. That is, the building is more likely to suffer damage under a strong seismic event compared to a building with a steep, curved pushover curve. Pushover curves are an important tool for engineers to assess the seismic performance of a structure. By understanding the building's response to lateral loads, engineers can better design structures to resist major seismic events and reduce the risks of structural damage.
