Pucciniastrum Epilobii Courses

Pucciniastrum epilobii (formerly known as Coleosporium epilobii) is a species of fungus in the family Mycosphaerellaceae. This species is commonly known as the ironweed rust. It is a pathogen that typically attacks plants in the genus Vernonia, with ironweed (Vernonia fasciculata) being the most susceptible host. The fungus attacks the leaves and stems of the ironweed plant and causes the foliage to become yellow and form red rust spots. The fungus can cause severe defoliation of the plant, which can reduce growth and yield. It is commonly found in areas where ironweed is grown and has been observed in parts of the United States and Canada. The fungus may also be spread to other nearby susceptible plants by wind, water, and contact with infected plants. Chemical control methods, such as fungicides, may be used to treat infestations, however preventive methods such as crop rotation and selecting disease-resistant plants are also recommended.
