Ptb Causes Courses

Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is an infection caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria mainly affect the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body. The condition is spread from person to person via airborne droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. The symptoms of PTB include chronic cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, fever, chills, night sweats, and weight loss. If left untreated, the condition can permanently damage the lungs, eventually leading to death. The most common cause of PTB is the inhalation of the bacteria from an infected person. People with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS, are more likely to develop the condition. Other risk factors for developing PTB include homelessness, current or previous intravenous drug use, living in overcrowded homes, or working in a profession that exposes one to the bacteria. People with diabetes, alcohol abuse, or malnutrition may also be at risk for developing the condition. Treatment for PTB is usually a multi-drug regimen of antibiotics, taken daily for six to nine months. It is important to complete the full course of treatment to avoid the risk of developing drug-resistant strains of the bacteria. If left untreated, PTB can be life-threatening. The best way to prevent infection is to practice good hygiene, get vaccinated, and avoid contact with people who have been diagnosed with the condition.
