Psychiatrist Course Duration
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders. To become a psychiatrist, a medical doctor must complete a range of educational and clinical requirements. A psychiatrist begins their career by attending a four-year undergraduate college or university to obtain a bachelor’s degree. After obtaining the bachelor’s degree, the individual must complete four years of medical school and one year of residency training in general psychiatry. Once the individual has obtained the necessary prerequisite experience, they must pass the American Medical Association's current competency exams. After these exams have been passed, the individual is ready to begin specialized psychiatry training. This consists of either a three-year residency or a two-year Categorical Psychiatrist Program. During this time, a psychiatrist learns the various techniques of therapy and pharmacology. The duration of a psychiatrist course is seven to eleven years, depending on the degree of specialization. This includes four years of undergraduate study, four years of medical school, and up to three years of residency training. During this time, the individual is exposed to a wide variety of medical and mental health issues and develops skills to diagnose and treat a range of psychological disorders. Following this, the individual typically works as a general psychiatrist or pursues advanced training in a specialty such as child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, or any of the other specialized fields.

- Earn your bachelor's degree. Graduating from college with a bachelor's degree is the first step toward a career as a psychiatrist. You don't need to major in a specific subject, but holding a degree in psychology, biochemistry, or biology can help build a strong foundation.
- Gain experience in college. While in college, you can start to build your resume by volunteering at local mental health service providers or joining psychology-related organizations.
- Develop your workplace skills. Aside from a strong knowledge of medicine, psychiatrists need a set of personal skills that include analytical thinking, emotional resilience, and empathy.
- Prepare for the MCAT. The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardized test used as an admissions requirement when you apply for a medical degree program.
- Apply to medical school. As you begin applying to medical schools, you'll need to decide on whether you want to pursue a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
- Complete a four-year residency. Following medical school, you'll need to spend another four years in a residency program. During this time, you'll treat people with mental health conditions in a real-world clinical setting under the supervision of a more experienced psychiatrist.
- Consider a specialty. Some psychiatrists choose to specialize in a specific area, such as child and adolescent psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, or brain injury medicine.
- Get your medical license. The application process for a medical license may differ from state to state, but you'll need a license to work as a psychiatrist in the United States.
- Pursue board certification. Pursuing board certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) is an optional step that can help you find further success in your profession.
- Embrace lifelong learning. Most states will require you to complete a certain number of continuing education credits each year to maintain your license.
