Proximal Causes Definition Courses
Proximal causes are defined as the immediate causes of a particular occurrence or event. It’s an approach used in public health that focuses on the direct or immediate causal factors of a given phenomenon or health problem – as opposed to the distal causes which lie further down the causal chain. Proximal causes are the immediate environmental, behavioural or biological determinants of a health outcome or condition. They represent the primary interventions or strategies that can be used to influence a certain health outcome. Examples of proximal causes include an individual’s lack of health knowledge or lifestyle choices, or an unsafe neighbourhood or environment. By identifying and addressing the proximal causes, public health has the potential to improve the health outcomes of individuals and populations.
