Prolastin Courses

Prolastin is a recombinant human alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor (rhα1-PI) that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency. A1AT deficiency is an inherited disorder where there is a lack of alpha 1-antitrypsin (A1AT) in the blood. This leads to the breakdown of tissue in the lungs and can cause serious health problems such as emphysema, bronchitis, and asthma. Prolastin helps to protect patients' lungs by replacing the A1AT protein that is missing in their blood. Prolastin is used to treat patients with mild, moderate and severe A1AT deficiency. It is given through intravenous (IV) infusion, usually over a period of one to two hours. The recommended dose of Prolastin is 60 mg/kg every four weeks. In patients with moderate to severe A1AT deficiency, the dose is 80 to 120 mg/kg every four weeks. Common side effects observed with Prolastin include headache, chills, fever, fatigue, rash, and increased bruising or bleeding. Prolastin is a very effective treatment for A1AT deficiency and has been shown to improve the symptoms of the disorder and slow the progression of lung disease. It is important to note that Prolastin is not a cure and ongoing treatment is necessary to maintain improvement.
