Prognathism Causes Courses

Prognathism is a condition where the chin and lower jaw protrude when the mouth is closed. It can be caused by a number of things and the treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Congenital Prognathism: This type of prognathism is either inherited or caused by some kind of gene mutation. It can vary in severity and the lower jaw could be misaligned or protrude more or less relative to the rest of the face. Treatment options include orthodontic braces, jaw surgery and orthognathic surgery (jaw reshaping surgery). Abnormal Growth: Abnormal growth in the jaw can lead to prognathism. A person may have a large lower jaw due to certain hormones, such as growth hormone, being hyper-active. In this case, the treatment may involve growth hormone suppression or orthodontic braces. Jaw surgery may be required in some cases. Signs of Inflammation: Prognathism can be caused by inflammation of the jaw joint. This can be the result of periodontal disease where bacteria inflame the gums and create an infection around the jaw joint. Treatment options include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications and in some cases, jaw surgery to realign the jaws. Trauma: Trauma to the lower jaw can cause prognathism. This can be the result of a facial injury or accident in which the lower jaw is damaged or displaced. The treatment in this case is usually to treat any facial trauma and reset the jaw through jaw surgery. Overall, prognathism can have many causes, from genetics to trauma. Treatment options vary and depend on the severity of the prognathism and what causes it. An experienced maxillofacial surgeon will be able to recommend the best options for treatment based on the patient's individual circumstances.
