Presenteeism Causes Courses
Presenteeism is a term used to describe a phenomenon whereby workers remain at their jobs despite being physically or mentally unwell. The causes of presenteeism can be both external and internal, including workplace culture, economic pressures, and individual preferences. Externally, workplace culture can have an impact on presenteeism. Unsupportive or confrontational workplace cultures can create an environment where workers feel frowned upon for taking time off for sickness or personal issues. Working for an unreasonable boss can also contribute to presenteeism, as employees may fear retribution if they are not present and working. Additionally, economic pressures, such as a fear of losing one's job, can cause workers to engage in presenteeism in order to protect against job insecurity. Internally, individual preferences can also contribute to presenteeism. For example, some workers may take pride in meeting challenging goals and be reluctant to take time off to rest or attend to medical needs. Additionally, some people may simply prefer the company of their work colleagues to the solitude of being home sick. Presenteeism can create a downward spiral in which employees become increasingly unwell due to lack of rest, leading to further presenteeism. This can result in decreased productivity and lack of motivation, as well as more health and safety risks for both the individual and their colleagues. To avoid the risks associated with presenteeism, employers should encourage a supportive, understanding workplace culture and recognize the importance of allowing employees time to rest.
