Presbycusis is the name for a type of hearing loss that is associated with aging. It is a common condition, affecting more than one out of every three people aged 65 and older in the United States. It is also one of the most common chronic conditions among older adults. Presbycusis is an age-related form of hearing loss that is caused by changes in the inner ear. It is the result of several factors, including natural aging, disease, exposure to excessive noise, and certain medications or treatments. Symptoms of presbycusis range from mild to severe and include difficulty understanding speech, especially at a distance or in a large room, a feeling of fullness in the ear, a constant ringing or buzzing noise in the ear, and difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds. There is no known cure for presbycusis, but there are several treatment options available. These include the use of hearing aids or other assistive technology, speech therapy or other forms of specialized rehabilitation therapy, or cochlear implants. Additionally, lifestyle interventions, such as avoiding noisy environments, can also help to reduce the impact of presbycusis.
