Prednisone Causes Immunosuppression Courses
Prednisone causes immunosuppression by suppressing the function of the immune system. This is done by blocking the production of lymphocytes and cytokines, which are involved in inflammation and the body's natural ability to fight off infections. The drug also slows down the body's response to allergic reactions, which can prevent or reduce inflammation associated with allergies and asthma. Because prednisone allows the body to be more susceptible to infection, it is commonly prescribed to people who are undergoing chemotherapy and other forms of immunosuppressive therapy. While immunosuppression may offer the benefit of reducing the risk of damaging side effects from other treatments, it can also lead to a decrease in the body’s ability to fight off infections, and result in an increased risk of opportunistic infections. To help reduce the risk of such complications, prednisone should only be used when absolutely necessary and in combination with other therapies. Furthermore, it’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of infection when taking prednisone, and to inform one’s doctor if any are present.
