Precedex Causes Hypertension Courses
Precedex (dexmedetomidine hydrochloride) is a sedative, analgesic, and anxiolytic drug commonly used for sedation. This powerful drug can have many potential side effects, including an increase in blood pressure (hypertension). Precedex's ability to induce hypertension is caused by its ability to stimulate the release of norepinephrine from the sympathetic nervous system. This release of norepinephrine is responsible for causing vasoconstriction and thus increases systemic blood pressure. Precautions should be taken when using Precedex, especially in patients with pre-existing hypertension or other cardiovascular health conditions, as the drug's properties can further aggravate certain conditions. It is important that clinicians monitor blood pressure and other vital signs often when using this medication in order to quickly recognize increasing blood pressure and take steps to reduce or counteract it.
