Prakara, in Hinduism, is the term for a defensive barrier, wall, or fence typically made of stone or clay. These defensive enclosures are typically found around Hindu temples, fortifications, or sacred groves in order to protect the sanctity of the area within. Prakaras can also be found around villages and towns to protect them from invasion or attack. Prakaras are believed to have spiritual significance in Hinduism. In some cases, they are thought of as providing protection from distracting influences and evil influences. For example, in various tantric exercises, prakaras can be used to create a metaphorical barrier to separate the practitioner from external influences. Others believe that prakaras can protect the energy of the people inside from being diminished by the energy of the outside world, an idea that is linked to the theory of cosmic energy. In addition to their spiritual significance, prakaras can also be an important part of architectural designs. Many temples, forts, and other buildings are designed with prakaras in mind. Each wall and corner of a prakara is meant to bring balance and harmony to a structure and to the people within it. Prakaras are often decorated with intricately designed murals and statues to further enhance the spiritual and aesthetic appeal of the structure. A prakriti is a type of prakara with fewer walls and trenches, typically used only around large temples or palaces. This type of defense was most common during India’s medieval period, when defensive walls and terrain made up the average protection of a settlement or city. Prakaras remain a significant part of Hindu life and architecture today, though they are no longer needed for defensive purposes.
